How long you get
| Total Direct Loan principal when you enter the plan | Repayment period |
|---|---|
| Less than $25,000 | 10 years |
| $25,000 to less than $50,000 | 15 years |
| $50,000 to less than $100,000 | 20 years |
| $100,000 or more | 25 years |
Payments are fixed, at least $50 a month, and sized to pay the loan off in that period. If you add loans later, or leave and come back, the period is recalculated from your balance at that time.
Who is on it
- Borrowers with a Direct Loan first paid out on or after July 1, 2026 who pick it, or who don’t pick a plan (it is the default).
- Parent PLUS loans made on or after July 1, 2026, which can only use this plan.
- Former SAVE borrowers with a newer loan who miss their deadline.
The PSLF catch
StudentAid.gov states that payments made while enrolled in the Tiered Standard Plan are not qualifying payments for PSLF or Temporary Expanded PSLF. Borrowers pursuing PSLF on newer loans have RAP as their qualifying option.
Example
$60,000 at 6.52% falls in the 20-year tier. The payment is about $448 a month, and the total paid over 20 years is about $107,500. The calculator works this out for your balance.
