RAP payment on $25,000 income: single, no dependents

RAP: $41.67 a month in year one. IBR: $10.00 (10% version).

How the numbers come out

  • $25,000 falls in RAP's 2% band, so the yearly base payment is 2% of the whole amount: $500.00 a year, or $41.67 a month.
  • IBR counts only income above $23,940 (150% of the 2026 poverty line for one person): 10% of the rest is $10.00 a month, or $13.25 at the 15% rate for borrowers who owed a federal loan on July 1, 2014. IBR can't go above the 10-year standard payment.
  • In year one, IBR's payment (10% version) is $31.67 a month lower than RAP's.
  • The next RAP step is at $30,000: one dollar above it, this household's RAP payment rises from $50.00 to $75.00 a month.
  • With $80,000, IBR leaves about $178,284 to be forgiven after 20 years under these assumptions; forgiveness outside PSLF may be taxed.
