Rules verified Oct 17, 2026 · 2026 poverty guidelines, 48 states

RAP payment on $75,000 income: single, no dependents

RAP: $437.50 a month in year one. IBR: $425.50 (10% version).

How the numbers come out

  • $75,000 falls in RAP's 7% band, so the yearly base payment is 7% of the whole amount: $5,250.00 a year, or $437.50 a month.
  • IBR counts only income above $23,940 (150% of the 2026 poverty line for one person): 10% of the rest is $425.50 a month, or $638.25 at the 15% rate for borrowers who owed a federal loan on July 1, 2014. IBR can't go above the 10-year standard payment.
  • In year one, IBR's payment (10% version) is $12.00 a month lower than RAP's.
  • The next RAP step is at $80,000: one dollar above it, this household's RAP payment rises from $466.67 to $533.34 a month.
  • With a $20,000 balance, the RAP payment pays the loan off in 5 years, faster than the 10-year Standard plan.
  • With $80,000, IBR leaves about $24,904 to be forgiven after 20 years under these assumptions; forgiveness outside PSLF may be taxed.
